Explanation of Economy: An abundance of oil and natural gas supply; strong government spending on infrastructure and construction.

Graph Pattern: Steadily increasing from 1988 to 2012 with some volatility, decreasing since 2012.

Explanation of Economy: A well educated population, with excellent infrastructure and lots of crude oil and natural gas.

Geography: Small in size; island nation in the Indian Ocean

Graph Pattern: Steady increase since 1980 with little volatility.

Explanation of Economy: A weak economy with an uneducated labor force, a lack of natural  resources and infrastructure.

What geographic patterns do you see for the top 30 countries?

Most are located in either North America, Western Europe, Middle East, and  “Australasia”

There is no pattern in size of the country…both large and small nations are included. However, one third are small in size.

Only four of the top 30 are landlocked

What geographic patterns do you see for the bottom 30 countries?

The majority of the bottom 30 are located in Africa

Half of them are landlocked i.e. they have no access to shipping

Five of them are island nations.

Assignment: Phase Two

Graph Pattern:

Using the graph feature of the following countries (click on the name of the country). Describe the patterns in the graph for each country. Attempt to analyze “why” the patterns rise or fall.

Explanation of Economy

Then, for each country, use the link posted on the blog and click on the “ECONOMY” button once you are on the factbook page. Summarize in a sentence or two why they are high or low on the list of PPP rank in the world.

Essential vocabulary:

Infrastructure – the utilities, including power, water, and sewer. It also includes transportation (water, road, and rail) and airports.

natural resources: renewable and non-renewable raw materials that contribute to an economy.

education/training – A system in place that is able to properly train  the workers

Volatile – changes often – undependable

Stable – steady and dependable

TUESDAY – Warm-up – Eastern Europe practice quiz.

Activity – FINISH the map showing top 30 and bottom 30 countries in PPP ranking. If not completed in class IT IS HOMEWORK.

Activity: When finished with the map, answer the questions posted on the assignment in GC.
